What is a Yoga Snack?

A Yoga Snack is a short sequence of yoga poses, movement and breathing exercises specifically designed to be performed in a classroom setting. The Yoga Snacks for the Classroom Manual and accompanying videos include 12 Yoga Snacks. Yoga Snacks 1-7 are performed standing in the classroom while Yoga Snacks 8-12 are meant to be performed seated in a chair. Each Yoga Snack is designed to be completed in 5-8 minutes. Yoga Snacks consist of a Move, Focus and Breathe section. Each Move section consists of 3 yoga poses or movement exercises that will strengthen, stretch and energize the body and mind. The Focus section consists of one yoga pose requiring balance, cross-lateral movement or oculomotor movement. Movements that require balance, crossing the body’s midline and oculomotor skills help to improve attention, activate both sides of the brain (more brain power) and, with practice, can help teach students “how” to focus. The Breathe section is an age-appropriate breathing exercise that will bring students to a calm and alert state ready to focus and learn.

Why Yoga Snacks?

Children need to move to learn. Brain research has proven that the brain is activated by physical movement which improves classroom behavior and academic performance. Being sedentary as little as 10 minutes can produce fatigue and decreased focus. Less time for physical education, recess and movement in the classroom is actually the wrong direction if we want students to engage and learn to the best of their abilities. Yoga Snacks are designed for teachers to offer their students a quick movement break that will improve their students’ attention, reduce restlessness and “wake up” the brain for learning.
